• A human transition: a fundamental rethink of how societies, governments and markets can ensure the health and cognitive and social well-being of all those young people, including the most vulnerable 
• A just climate transition: both to decarbonise and to manage the human and economic impacts of a global crisis they did not cause

To do this work, we are building a new type of impact firm.

LOCATION: Applicants must be eligible to work and willing to be based in any one of the following countries: South Africa, Kenya, Côte d’ Ivoire, United Kingdom, and India, or from home in other countries. You must already have the right to work in the location you apply for.

THE HUMAN DEVELOPMENT PRACTICE

Within Genesis, work on Social Protection is led by the Human Development (HD) practice team.

The HD practice works for a world where everyone can develop to their full potential. We are focused on expanding meaningful rights and opportunities for people who are marginalized and are particularly committed to children, women, and young people in Africa and the Middle East. We help governments, their global partners, and private and non-state clients to improve the delivery of key human development services while navigating rapid changes in demography, climate, and technology, and the shock of Covid-19.

We are currently organised across six service lines: social sector financing; public financial management; early childhood education; school; school to work transitions; and social protection. We expect to grow these and add others soon.

The team of 40 is currently based in Johannesburg, Cape Town, Kenya, West Africa, East Africa, the Middle East, Europe, and India, and will grow substantially over the coming year. We work across about 50 projects at any one time. 

ROLE DESCRIPTION:

You will assist clients in unlocking and realizing value in human development. This involves helping governments and their partners understand and address various risks affecting their populations. These risks encompass "fat tail" risks such as Covid-19, conflict, or catastrophic climate change, as well as risks associated with age, disease, the economy, and technological change. You will support clients in developing responsive, adaptive, and comprehensive Social Protection systems, including social transfers, social insurance, support for labour and jobs, and social care services. The ultimate outcome will be improved risk and shock management for marginalized populations, ensuring access to a minimum safe income for a decent life.
